Two new polls this morning augur ill for President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats who control Congress. The worst -- from Gallup -- finds that for the first time since Obama took the oath, his support among independents, a key voter segment in his decisive 2008 coalition election win, has fallen below 40%.

Obama's Assistant Attorney General, Thomas E. Perez, told the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on Friday there was "insufficient evidence" to bring a civil complaint against members of the New Black Panther Party who disrupted a Philadelphia polling place in the 2008 general elections.

Gallup's Job Creation Index in April hit its best level since November 2008, with 27% of companies hiring and 22% letting people go. Job creation improved compared to March in every region but the West, where it was unchanged.
